The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG does everything desired: It has big power, even bigger brakes and a ride/handling balance that’s just about perfect. In the world of supercars, it is also a relative bargain.

Some cars seem so inviting, but prove to be disappointing when driven. Others, like the Volkswagen GTI, appear somewhat staid at first blush, but the drive is divine.

The Audi A3 TDI is sporty, attractive and comfortable. Throw in decidedly decent road manners and you have a very compelling set of wheels. Nothing, however, proved to be quite as appealing as the diesel engine. It delivers power without penalty.

Running up the Pacific Coast Highway near San Francisco proved just how well the Acura MDX comes together. It can be driven quickly without feeling as though it is about to heel over. There is, in fact, more than a modicum of sport in the MDX’s makeup.

The Mercedes-Benz S400 more than satisfies the bulk of any driver’s needs while leaving a smaller footprint on a fragile environment.

As good as the BMW’s 3-series gas engines are, the diesel is better. Nothing gives the driver a sense of power quite like a having a mountain-sized torque plateau at one’s right foot.

There are a lot of compelling reasons to add the 370Z to one’s list of must-have cars. It has equal measures of power and panache. However, it was the pricing that floored me. There are lesser rides that command significantly more money.

The Audi Q7’s rework involves two new derivatives of the S4’s sweet 3.0L TFSI engine and a new transmission. Both engines blend direct fuel injection with a supercharger, which delivers the power in a smooth, linear fashion.

The Subaru Outback is car-like in its comfort and it carves a corner without giving the driver white knuckles. It is, as someone from the real Outback might say, a ripper.

The Nissan Rogue has the right blend of comfort, utility and power. Its looks, handling and refined on-road comportment set it apart from many other crossovers.

The Countryman is a hip car and there are many Mini fans who would love to move up in size without leaving the brand. Beyond that, it has that all-important impishness to its personality, and it romps through a corner as well as any self-respecting Mini.

There was a lot to like about the previous Audi A4. The 2010 version is so much better – it now competes head to head with its key German rivals. The beauty of the rework is that it does not blunt the edgier drive whatsoever.
